We Built the First LEGO Slot Machine

If you liked our LEGO casino build, you’re gonna love this one. It started, like most bad ideas, with a simple question: how hard could it be? We had a table covered in LEGO Technic, a free weekend, and a stubborn conviction that a one-armed bandit is basically just three spinning wheels and a lever. Two weeks later we had a working machine, a much deeper respect for casino engineers, and a small mountain of rejected prototypes. Here’s how it went.

The deceptively simple idea

A slot machine looks like the easy build. Three reels, a handle, some symbols, a payout. We sketched it on the back of an instruction booklet in about ten minutes and figured we’d have it running by Sunday.

The core mechanism came together fast. We built a Technic frame to hold three reels — drums made from LEGO wheels with hand-stickered symbols around the rim: cherries, bells, sevens, the classics. The two problems that nearly beat us

The first problem is randomness. A spinning reel that always stops in the same place isn’t a slot machine, it’s a music box. We needed each reel to land somewhere unpredictable every single pull. Our first attempts used pure friction — spin it and hope — but the reels were too consistent, settling into lazy patterns. The finished build stands about 40 centimeters tall.
